Author: Life Armour
Getting back into balance has been a priority for many of us during the last two years, after all the challenges and stress that many have endured. Adaptogens are receiving a lot of attention in the wellness community and for good reason. Whilst they’ve been used for thousands of years in the East it seems Western cultures are just catching up to the many benefits adaptogens can provide. From stress support, energy, mental clarity and sleep. One thing is for sure, they are here to stay. Read on to find out why.
So what are adaptogens?
Adaptogens are bio-plant actives such as roots, mushrooms, and herbs that have adapted to thrive in harsh environments. They've been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years to help our bodies resist the negative effects of stress and restore balance. “Adaptogens can help to bring the body back into harmony and balance” - Dr Christie Lewis
How do they work?
Traditionally used for thousands of years, adaptogens are thought to improve non-specific stress resistance and lower susceptibility to stressors, resulting in stress protection and a longer resistance phase. Simply put, this means adaptogens help to bring the body back into homeostasis, i.e. balance. Adaptogens are clever ingredients that adapt to what your body needs when it needs it. From restoring balance when cortisol levels peak to providing clarity and energy. The same adaptogen can work differently on different people according to their needs. So for one person the adaptogen may bring calm and balance whilst for another it can help energise.
Energy
Panax Ginseng; contributes to the body's natural defence system, helping maintain stamina, supporting your energy levels as well as supporting your immune system.
Rhodiola: Is a popular adaptogen for fighting fatigue because of its ability to reduce weariness and helping build resilience to daily stressors.
Stress
Ashwagandha: One of the most well-known adaptogens, helping in the reduction of stress and anxiety. The ashwagandha plant is a tiny shrub native to India and North Africa with yellow flowers. Extracts or powder made from the plant's root or leaves are used to support a range of symptoms, including stress, insomnia, and hormone imbalance.
Shatavari Root: The Shatavari root, a member of the asparagus family, helps support physical and emotional stress whilst also increasing your vitality.
Shisandra berry: This apoptogenic plant is believed to help the body counteract feelings of anxiety and stress, as well as strengthen the body's defences.
